Naturalization

Permanent residents who have had permanent resident status for at least five (5) years, have English competency, and meet the residency, physical presence, and good moral character requirements, are eligible to file for and take the citizenship test to become a naturalized citizen. Spouses of U.S. citizens, who meet all of the requirements above and remain in a bona fide (true) marital union, are eligible to apply after only three (3) years of residency.

The application process ends with an interview with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Officer who will administer the citizenship test. The test is designed to ensure basic English skills and an understanding of U.S. civics and history. Each applicant is asked up to ten (10) questions and must answer at least six (6) correctly to pass. The entire interview is a test of English skills.

The main reasons and benefits to pursue U.S. citizenship are to become able to vote in U.S. elections, sit on juries, petition for additional family members (outside of spouses and children), and obtain and travel with a U.S. passport.
